MEDLEY OF NITIK textile

Designed by American collector Donald Harper and crafted by Javanese artisan Prasaja, this riotous batik is a veritable encyclopedia of geometric patterns called nitik. Each large circle showcases a different staccato sample.

Nitik are said to imitate plaiting, wickerwork and weaving. Many were inspired by the classic patterns on patola cloths once traded from Gujarat, India.

The zigzag pattern is called tirta teja, and means light glittering on water.

This percussive fabric is popping with visual rhythms akin to paradiddles and rolls played on the cymbals, snare and toms of a drum kit.
